My interest in PBSP started 15 years ago when I went into a group called “Patterns Workshop” run by Nancy Bochene. Nancy has a Masters in Family Therapy, and was trained in PBSP but never fully certified. I think she was excellent – just a natural, I guess. I did about 3 “structures” with her and one of them was life-changing -- I never had to wear a tooth guard again. There was a need inside me that had never been met before and it got met in that one structure. It alleviated so much anxiety immediately that I thought “Wow!” – Due to trauma I experienced when I was little, I’d been in therapy about 12 years prior to that and never experienced so much immediate relief. I had also done some Bioenergetics body work. I’d found it just wasn’t getting to enough depth to bring more peace and satisfaction to me. I was still very socially phobic and I had an “anxiety disorder” which was not significantly impacted by talk therapy. The cognitive behavioral work wasn’t penetrating the problem and the desensitization didn’t help. It really impressed me that there was a modalities like PBSP that could bring a “good-end” piece in quicker and in a more satisfying way than others. It was then that I decided that I wanted to become a therapist.
Another influence on my decision to become a therapist was my involvement in church. I was running a women’s group in my church. It started as a Bible study group and evolved over 10 years into something more like a therapy group. They told me I should get my license because the meetings were becoming so deep. I guess they figured I had a gifting in that area, but lest I might inadvertently hurt someone, I should get more training. There are a lot of hurting people in the church. I still have a healing prayer ministry -- for 4 years now. We pray and ask the Lord to bring truth to someone who’s believing lies. Actually, I’d like to write down sometime how PBSP compliments the Judeo Christian beliefs in a multitude of ways, such as how we’re hard-wired for love, closure, justice, and limiting. We’re not omnipotent, God is. We need to be bounded because we are His creations. Back to my official education, after High School I earned an AA degree in Liberal Arts then went to work in the commercial field. Over a period of 10 years, I moved up in the construction floor covering business until I became senior project manager. Because the work I was doing was not fulfilling, I decided that I wanted to go back to school at night for a BA in Psychology. I got my BA in Psychology in 1994. And in 1995 I decided to start heading for a Masters in Clinical Psychology from Trinity College of Graduate Studies in Anaheim, CA, because they had a program where you could do your masters and then go into a doctorate program. I now work as a Psychological Assistant until I am hopefully licensed as a psychologist in 2005. Currently, in my one-to-one work, I do some object relations. I also like to supplement cognitive behavioral work with body work such as PBSP, and sometimes I use EMDR. In fact, I am a Certified EMDR trainer. I am in a training group for Redecision Therapy which is the same therapy that Mary Goulding, (who wrote an article about her own PBSP structure on the pbsp.com website) does. It’s all under the umbrella of “Psychodynamics theory”. Some clients don’t want to look at their history so the techniques I use depend on what I sense they need. Yes, I do Christian counseling using scripture and guided imagery. I send clients home with homework, asking them to meditate on specific scripture. I would like to become fully officially trained in PBSP. Actually, a group of us in California are looking to start a Certified PBSP Training group based here, in conjunction with Summer Workshops in New Hampshire. One member of that group is my friend, Dr. Shelly Royalty. Another is Amy Brom, who Shelly and I met at the Summer Training in New Hampshire in 2003. Amy Brom is also planning to do her dissertation on PBSP. We spent one week of Summer PBSP Training last year (2003), and came to the next two weeks this year (2004) as well. In 2003, Shelly and I ran a PBSP-like group we called “Healing Patterns”. Now that we have two more weeks of PBSP training, Shelly and I are co-leading a group in San Diego at our facility, Reinicke Counseling and Associates. It started in August this year. Dr. Aimee Pearson told us that some of her other interests are cooking and entertaining her friends and their families – eating together and playing with their kids. Aimee’s husband has MA in counseling and is a school counselor. She has a 9 year old son who she and her husband like to take out fishing. Aimee lives in La Jolla, CA, and works both in San Diego and in Carlsbad, California. Dr. Shelly Royalty works for Reinicke Counseling Associates as a Psychological Assistant, while she finishes the licensing process for psychologists in 2005. Prior to her doctorate in psychology, she worked for over ten years as a pastoral counselor. A graduate of Fuller Seminary with a M.Div., she brings her understanding of Biblical truth and pastoral experience to the counseling setting. Shelly sees a wonderful theoretical compatibility with PBSP and Biblical theology, so that Christians are quite comfortable experiencing this modality.
